Love Poem 32

I have lived in love before

and

I have lived in hate before.

I have felt the extremes of

both sensations

where every part of the body and mind and soul are alive

and supercharged by pure energy.

There are some people in this world of ours

—and I include myself in this statement—

who think they are

above

the things that make us human

or whatever we consider ourselves to be.

The truth of the matter is that we

cannot

avoid feeling that which

we are hardwired to feel,

no matter

what we try,

what we say,

what we do,

or how often we lie to ourselves

and posture as though we can

exist without

the most fundamental emotions and feelings

any more than we could without

oxygen or

water,

or maybe that we can live with an empty belly.

One need not look very far to see how well

a hunger strike goes.

While there are many things from which we can run,

the primal gravity

of love and hate are not something from which we can break free.

We must understand

we will burn ourselves away

trying to dance between raindrops.

What will come, will come,

and what will be, will be

and we can attach ourselves to moments

and lifetimes of moments,

trying our very best to deny the unifying universal force.

Whether we choose to accept it or not,

to love and to hate is to exist and we have no choice in either.
